In 2011, Zurich-based architect Fawad Kazi, together with the KSSG-OKS planning consortium, won the competition for the rebuilding and extension of St Gallen's cantonal hospital (KSSG) and the new regional children's hospital for eastern Switzerland (OKS). By 2028, this huge undertaking will have transformed the whole area they are built in. This building monograph, laid out in five elegant volumes, documents in much detail the ambitious project, which is a significant trailblazer in the area of hospital design and urban development. This second volume is devoted to KSSG's Haus 10, situated at the northern end of the site. Connected to the hospital's main building by means of an ingenious passage, it serves to treat walk-in patients. Its flexible structure allows adaptions to suit also future needs of KSSG. Building with earth is ecological, sustainable and 100% recyclable. This material has been used to build houses, villages or cities since ancient times. Impressive architectures using the rammed earth building technique are created all over the world today. The ambient air quality of this building method is unsurpassed. Martin Rauch has been practising contemporary architecture using earth for over three decades. In this publication, he presents the results of his research and practical experience. The updated and extended new edition uses appealing language and images to convey the necessary expertise needed to plan and realise earthen architecture competently. Over a period of ten years, a number of existing structures will undergo vast rebuilding and new ones will be added, transforming a park with individual buildings into a single continuous complex. This new, eventually five-part monograph, documents this project in full detail. It highlights the significance of St Gallen's urban design as well as the specific demands on architectural design and construction and on the hospital's operations. Bauen mit Lehm ist oekologisch, nachhaltig und zu 100% recyclingfahig. Seit der Antike nutzen Menschen diesen Baustoff, um Hauser, Doerfer, Stadte zu errichten. Bis heute entstehen weltweit immer wieder beeindruckende Lehmarchitekturen, die hohe Raumluftqualitat dieser Bauweise bleibt unubertroffen. Martin Rauch errichtet seit mehr als drei Jahrzehnten zeitgenoessische Architektur in Lehm. Hermann Kaufmann als einer der wichtigsten Protagonisten, lotet mit seinem Buro seit Jahrzehnten die Grenzen des Materials aus. Das Illwerke Zentrum Montafon setzt Massstabe in Vorfabrikation und ist dabei ebenso prazise gebaut und wohnlich wie die kleinen Preziosen, fur die das Vorarlberg beruhmt ist. Die Publikation widmet sich der Entstehung des knapp 10.000 qm grossen Verwaltungszentrums, mit welchem hinsichtlich Groesse und industrieller Fertigung im Holzbau ein Quantensprung gelungen ist: Vom Einfluss des Wassers und der Topografie, von der Entwicklung der Kubatur bestimmt durch die statische Struktur des Bausystems und die einheitlichen Bedingungen fur alle Arbeitsplatze, bis hin zum Wandel der Burokultur durch die Architektur und schliesslich der Einbeziehung von Kunst am Bau.
